Literature Review
CONTROL OF IMMORALITY
According to Amoo in Ogundare (ed), 2003, various efforts have been taken so far to contained acts of immorality in Nigeria by successive administration. Such effort includes conference on.
Moral education and motivation in school holding in Lagos in 1990, National Conference on moral education held in Port Harcourt in 1982. They were to find lasting solution to immorality in the society.
Government also initiated policies to stem waves or acts of immorality which include purge of civil servant in 1995 attempt in 2006 to deploy soldiers to schools to restore and maintain moral education. The government also set up public complaint commission, the corrupt practices Bureau, one council for civil education and propaganda arrangements such as War against immorality and corruption (WAIC) and the national orientation agency the independent corrupt practices and order related offences commission (ICPC) and the economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC) were also established by Obasanjo administration to stem corruption and ensure transparency and accountability-other measures that are being taken to curtail act of immorality include the following:
Religion and moral education: immorality has a lot to do with moral amplitude, religious and moral education will be a strong means or tools of controlling it people should be educated in moral tends and religious norms to change the non-challant attitude to act of immorality. A part from religious institution involvement, homes and schools are also involved in correcting acts of immorality. A child starts to learn from home. It is there fore the duties of parents to train the children to differentiate between good bad and appreciate and value all that is good. Religious leaders and organizations are not only to preach what is good but should reflect it in their behaviour and attitudes. Moral education should be emphasized is the curriculum from secondary to primary school.
Another means of controlling immorality as outlined by Akinpelu D. (2002) is public enlightenment. Massive public enlightenment should as radio, television, and magazine. in spite of government efforts to wipe out of immorality, some people are hell-bent on destabilizing the effort. It is therefore advisable that the impact of acts of immorality should be clearly explained.
Laws legislation, edicts, decree or bylaws should be made whenever necessary by concerned authorities to curtail immorality these laws are to check those who are abundant to change and safeguard right and liberties of other peace loving citizens, to achieve its purpose, laws are not only is be made or enacted against acts of immorality but should importantly be enforced.
The laws enforcement agents such as the police, courts, state security agents and others should make sure that the law of the land prevails. Authentic should use all the available resources within their capacities to enforce laws made.
Another means of controlling immorality is to have good leaders. Example is said to be better than precepts leaders should not only preach but also do what they preach leaders should know that follows as see them as image worthy of emulation and respect it will be wise for the leaders to ensure that their behaviour measure up to expectation. A corrupt and immorality leader encourages immorality followers. Therefore it is only moral education leaders that can effectively check and immorality followers, because he has the moral justification to do so.
